Based on the average of 3.5 stars, we went here for lunch on 9/1 at about 1pm. We were expecting Japanese food. We received bad Chinese-like food. The "miso soup" we received was chicken broth. I'm not exaggerating. It was freakin' clear chicken broth without any seaweed, tofu or any other veggies. I've had a lot of miso soup in many restaurants and this was not, by any stretch of the imagination, miso soup. I'm still stunned by this. The menu contains a lot of Chinese-inspired dishes like pepper steak and fried wontons. Odd for a Japanese Steakhouse. I ordered yakiniku beef and sesame chicken and both proteins tasted OK, but I'm not sure what was Japanese about them. My plate consisted of the beef, chicken, and a side of (what I was told were) glazed carrots on top of a pile of fried rice. The glazed carrots were another stunner because I don't think they were actually carrots. I think they were overcooked sweet potatoes or yams! I asked our server what type of carrots they were and she didn't know. They were mushy and way too sweet and I honestly don't believe they were carrots. There wasn't even a hint of carrot taste in the "carrots". My husband had the spicy pepper chicken with the same glazed carrots and fried rice I had. The spicy pepper chicken wasn't spicy AT ALL. Not. One. Bit. Spicy. The fried rice as overcooked and bland and hidden under the other food that was covered in multiple way-too-sweet sauces. The server placed on our table a squeeze bottle of what I think was supposed to be mustard duck sauce. She never said what it was or why she gave it to us. The server didn't ask us about refills on drinks until after we had the check, which came with fortune cookies. Fortune cookies at a Japanese restaurant! This restaurant doesn't serve Japanese food. I'm not sure how to describe it. Mediocre Chinese-American with a greasy southern diner twist? Chicken broth? Fortune cookies? Carrots that aren't carrots? Duck sauce in a squeeze bottle? I'm still bewildered by this experience. Yeah, we won't be back.

I love Yamato's I have been coming here for years and I am always very satisfied with my meal. LARGE portions enough to share or have for leftovers this next day. All in all I feel like this is a place for a filling meal for low cost.

I've been going here for years and still love it. Generous portions, good food, decent prices and nice service. Current favorite is the pepper steak-it's basically yakiniku plus peppers and onions. Ask for it extra spicy with ginger sauce on the side. Since I drink water, the pepper steak plus a decent tip comes out to $10. Not bad. Same prices for lunch and dinner.

this isn't japanese food. it shouldn't even be called a "steakhouse". food was mediocre at best and way too salty. i had the double combo with spicy chicken and yakinuku. it came with rice and a side of carrots that seemed to be marinated in sugar water. so the dish itself was too sweet and too salty. service was alright. would it really kill our waitress to smile every once in awhile? i won't be coming back.

Yuck! This place feels super dirty and sketchy. The food was coated in a thick, sweet sauce probably full of MSG.

Very sad food! No options for vegetarians! No tofu!!!! No miso soup, no rolls, notice at all. Carrots were overdone and very sweet. The rice was not fresh for sure. My stars go to the tea freshly brewed and to the staff, very helpful. But I will not be returning. :(

Quick and huge portions. Every time I go I get yaki. It's always perfect. If eating here once a week is wrong I don't want to be right.

The shrimp sauce alone is worth four stars. I usually get a combo of yaki and whatever else I'm feeling that day. I drench everything in the shrimp sauce especially the carrots. Yum. The service is always quick and friendly. The prices are reasonable for the huge portions you get.
